Big and bold, smoky, dark chocolate, clean finish
Ol' Darkness is our "dark roast to end all dark roasts." Brewed daily, it features a deep smoky strength with a big body and powerful dark chocolate notes.
We brew Ol' Darkness every day, but a pour-over of this dark roast will expand the smoky profile even further.
Ol' Darkness is also available in 1lb or 1/2lb whole or ground beans.
Dark roast refers to a type of coffee that has been roasted for a longer period of time, resulting in a rich, bold, and sometimes smoky flavor profile. The longer roasting time causes the coffee beans to caramelize, which gives them a darker color and a more intense taste. Dark roast coffee is often associated with a strong and bitter taste, but it can also have notes of chocolate, nut, or caramel, depending on the origin of the beans. Due to its boldness, dark roast coffee is often favored by those who prefer a stronger and more robust taste in their coffee.
The island of Sumatra features interior mountain ranges and a location near the equator, meaning geographically and climatologically an ideal place to be growing coffee. The soil is dark and volcanic, clocking in at pH levels of 4.5 to 5.5, and has a 10-month rainy season with only two dry months — all supremely ideal for natural irrigation practices.
On top of requiring low maintenance from the farmers, it also creates a surprising problem: coffee grows all year round. There are two distinct harvesting seasons where the bulk of coffee is collected, but farmers can expect to see buds and fruit all year round.
Sumatran coffee comes from three regions on the island in particular: Mandheling, Lintong, and Gayo. A number of varietals can be found in these regions.

Known as “Tim Tim” in Latin America, the Timor Hybrid is a truly unique interspecies coffee cultivar. This hybrid, which originated from the natural crossing of a Robusta and an Arabica plant on the island of Timor in the 1940s, stands as a singular phenomenon in coffee history. Since its discovery, the Timor Hybrid has become foundational to many modern hybrids, as coffee researchers and farmers seek out plants that are resilient, disease-resistant, and highly productive.
The Timor Hybrid marries the robust nature of Robusta with the smoother flavor notes typically found in Arabica. Its strong, thick trunk and drooping branches allow for efficient nutrient distribution, leading to high cherry yields—something farmers deeply value.
This exceptional cultivar not only embodies resilience and adaptability but also plays a vital role in the ongoing development of coffee cultivation worldwide.
